Louise Pitre Joins Workshop for New Sting Musical, “The Last Ship”

Pitre, Louise Pitre.  That’s what we may be calling one of our greatest musical theatre Divas now that she’s working with the author of “Skyfall,” the latest in the James Bond movie franchise.

She began rehearsal in New York today on a workshop for “The Last Ship,” a new musical with new songs and lyrics by Sting.  Set in his childhood home of Newcastle, England, the show is quasi-autobiographical and also will include songs from his vast catalogue of Number One hits.  “Playbill” reports they will be given “new context” within the narrative.

Louise first turned down the workshop invitation … “I said `No’ three times” … due to her schedule of concerts and meetings for her original show she is writing.  It is scheduled to open Theatre Passe Muraille’s new season late next September.  It’s an autobiographical cabaret called “On the Rocks” in which, of course, she will star, surrounded by an all-female cast.

“I hate to take time away from working on it to do this,” she told S&S, “but this (“The Last Ship”) has an amazing team and a crazy good cast they’ve put together for this reading.”

The creative team is loaded with the best, most accomplished talent.  Prolific playwright and screenwriter John Logan, who penned “Skyfall,” has co-written the book treatment with Brian Yorkey who earned a Pulitzer Prize and Tony for “Next to Normal.”

Among Logan’s previous plays are the Mark Rothko bio “Red,” the current Bette Midler Broadway hit “I’ll Eat You Last” and the West End play “Peter and Alice,” starring Dame Judi Dench and Ben Whishaw, who played the new “Q” in “Skyfall.”

The director is another Tony Award winner, Joe Mantello while co-producers are Jeffrey Seller (“Rent,” “In the Heights”) and Kathryn Schenker, Sting’s longtime manager.

he workshop ends May 11th.
