An Insider’s Look at Tony Best Revival Nominee “She Loves Me”

SLM’s Music Whiz Shares His Thoughts

It's not every day you receive a fan note from a legendary Broadway lyricist, one that is being honored this year with a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.  Then again, David Krane isn’t your everyday composer/arranger.  The show is “She Loves Me,” but the following is a “HeLoves Me” moment.

Last June 10th, on opening night of the Roundabout Theatre Company’s production, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, who survives his late partner, composer Jerry Bock, wrote David, complimenting him on the incidental music and dance arrangements he composed for the revival.  It is an opening night note that, he told Song & Script, he will cherish forever:

“Dear David, I’ve always been extremely fond of `She Loves Me.’ I thought it was just fine as it was.  Now, after hearing what you added, I realize that it was missing something all along, and you supplied it! For this I give you my deepest thanks and my love, Sheldon.”

David Krane, a long-time Song & Script friend who is one of the most in-demand composers, arrangers, directors … you name it … on Broadway and in TV and movie musicals, is thrilled “She Loves Me” has been nominated for so many Awards ... eight ... a rarity in the category.  The others this year have three or four nominations max.

"She Loves Me" already has won four Drama Desk Awards including "Outstanding Revival of a Musical" and the Outer Critics Circle Award, also for “Outstanding Revival of a Musical.”

The awards come less than a month before the release of the show’s original cast CD on Ghostlight Records July 8th.  In an early CD review, “Center on the Aisle” raved “(Laura) Benanti leads her cast bravely and boldly in their creation of the definitive recording, a commemorative of this glorious production.”

The 28-page full-color booklet in a fold-out wallet package includes production photography, a synopsis and a message from the Roundabout’s artistic director Todd Haimes.

Roundabout Theatre Company’s critically acclaimed revival of Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s “She Loves Me” (SLM) is a favorite to win at this year’s Tony Awards Sunday night despite competition from the popular "The Color Purple" in the Best Revival of a Musical category.  Other nominees are “Spring Awakening” and “Fiddler on the Roof,’ also written by Bock and Harnick.  SLM has the most nominations of any of these rivals.

David Krane shared his excitement with us via e-mail:

"It was a joy to work on what is considered the perfect musical, where every song and book scene so beautifully leads from one to another, and the characterizations are so vivid and complex,” he said.

“The incredible cast and creative team were wonderful, and it was a joy to compose new dance music for Warren Carlyle’s spirited choreography and new underscore for scene transitions that accommodated the brilliant David Rockwell’s Drama Desk Award-winning set.”

Other Tony categories in which “She Loves Me” is nominated are:

·      Zachary Levi, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical;

·      Laura Benanti, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical;

·      Jane Krakowski, Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical;

·      David Rockwell, Best Scenic Design of a Musical;

·      Jeff Mahshie, Best Costume Design of a Musical;

·      Scott Ellis, Best Direction of a Musical;

·      Larry Hochman, Best Orchestrations

Critics raved when this revival of SLM opened.  The Wall Street Journal named it the most romantic of all Broadway musicals, describing it as “Pure delight!”  Variety called it “absolutely flawless… Roundabout’s enchanting revival is so charming, you wish it would follow you home.”  “A splendid, joy-stuffed production,” raved Time Out New York.

“She Loves Me,” its press material says, “is a heartwarming musical comedy classic about finding love the good old-fashioned way.  It follows Georg (Levi) and Amalia (Benanti), two parfumerie clerks who aren’t quite the best of friends.  Constantly bumping heads while on the job, the sparring co-workers can’t seem to find common ground.  But little do they know, the anonymous romantic pen pals they have both been falling for happen to be each other.  Will love continue to blossom once their identities are finally revealed?”
